DESCRIPTION:Out Front at The Beaver \nA  UK super group is next up at North Devon Jazz Club in The Beaver\, Appledore on 1st June.  Called Out Front the band will perform music from their album Buried Webs which is inspired by  two of jazz’s greatest ‘inside-outside’ masters; Booker Little and Andrew Hill. Drawing on a wealth of fabulous compositions and featuring a rich line-up of three horns\, drums and bass\, the band explores the vast possibilities of this music\, from joyous straight ahead time playing to the most open of improvisation. \nLed by trumpeter Nick Malcolm the band includes alto saxophonist Jason Yarde\, tenor saxophonist Jake McMurchie\, bass player Olie Brice and drummer Dave Smith. Nick Malcolm has been praised by Bebop Spoken Here as ‘a supremely gifted musician…a trumpet player for the 21st century’. Jason Yarde is one of the UK’s top saxophonists who has\, according to The Guardian ’quietly blossomed to World Class’\, while fellow saxophonist Jake McMurchie is the key driving force behind the award-winning band Get The Blessing. Jazz writer Brian Morton commented that bassist Olie Brice ‘makes the entire body of his bass sing’ while drummer Dave Smith\, best known for his work with Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters\, exhibits\, according to the LA Times\, ‘a mastery of irresistible rhythms’.  \nThe gig starts at 8:30pm and is hosted by the North Devon Jazz Club. \n \nThis event has been booked by The North Devon Jazz Club who have kindly agreed to include it in the Appledore Music Festival programme.

DESCRIPTION:Sophie Smiles is a multi-instrumentalist\, vocalist and band leader who has worked as a touring bass player and pianist. Hailing from London and a lifetime lover of New Orleans piano masters\, Sophie plays rhythm and blues and Mississippi grooves. Her band “What We Play is Life” is an evolving line up of fantastic and spirited players\, playing an eclectic and one off set.  \nAt the Appledore Music Festival this year Sophie is joined by James Millman on guitar\, Dayle Helsby on bass\, Emmanuel Segun on sax and Mike Mckenzie on drums.  \nThe band’s name\, “What We Play is life”\, comes from a quote by Louis Armstrong\, a New Orleans native. \nThis concert is presented by the North Devon Jazz Club.
